The award season is winding down. The Oscars are now the only major ceremony penciled in, although the nominations are now out. With that in mind, it’s time to reflect on the biggest and most shocking snubs so far this season. Who’s not made the cut this year? Despite the critic’s acclaim…
SELMA
The biggest rejection of all is undoubtedly that of Selma, starring David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey and Tim Roth. Overlooked entirely at the Baftas and a sole win for original song at the Golden Globes, the civil rights historical drama could be redeemed at the Academy Awards; it’s nominated for Best Picture, although the odds are not looking favourable.
The lack of recognition has been put down to its late release date, although critics are largely disagreeing.
THE IMITATION GAME
Nominated for 8 Oscars, Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Imitation Game’s snub has been through its lack of wins, not nominations. The Alan Turing biopic, also featuring Kiera Knightley failed to pick up an award at the Baftas and Golden Globes; with critics feeling the immensely well-received picture has been harshly unlucky not to pick up a major gong.
BOB HOSKINS
The legendary Bob Hoskins sadly passed away back in April of last year and the outrage was real when the Baftas failed to recognise his achievements at their ceremony last week. Backlash on social media forced the body to release a statement defending the decision, as Hoskins had an obituary featured at the Television Awards last year. Regardless, the much-loved Hoskins’ in-memoriam snub hasn’t gone done well at all.
JENNIFER ANISTON
Jennifer Aniston’s surprisingly excellent turn in Cake has meant a number of nominations but not much in the way of wins, losing out at the SAG awards and Golden Globes. Astonishingly, the former sitcom star was overlooked for any recognition at the Oscars, despite her acclaim elsewhere; she’s clearly short of friends at the Academy.
NIGHTCRAWLER
The intense thriller, which Jake Gyllenhaal transformed himself for, is another film that didn’t make the waves it arguably deserved at the Oscars. A sole nomination for best writing is a shock, but the lack of wins elsewhere among the big events implies it was never on the cards, despite the amazing reception amongst critics and moviegoers. The Brits loved this one the best with 4 nominations at the Baftas.
