White-washed villages, blue-domed churches, sensational sunsets and the vivid turquoise of the Aegean sea as far as the eye can see: it’s no surprise that Santorini has long been a hit with holidaymakers. Now, the idyllic Greek island can add another drawcard to its list.
This July saw the opening of Sandblu Santorini, a brand-new resort that combines Santorini’s world-famous sun-soaked backdrop with that which is increasingly difficult to come by on the island – exclusivity.
Nestled at the base of Ancient Thera, an archaeological site that consists of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine ruins, Sandblu pays homage to its rich Cycladic roots, while simultaneously promoting a distinctly modern ideal of luxury and elegance. 27 rooms, 22 suites and two villas are peppered throughout the grounds, which sprawl across the volcanic foothills of Ancient Thera like a traditional Santorinian village.
A sense of calm pervades the resort. Its airy, light-filled spaces are characterised by soft colour palettes and nature-inspired furnishings, while a number of the rooms feature private pools and terraces that look out across the sea, bringing the outdoors in. Guests can take their choice of pools at the resort, from the main infinity pool Blu, where sun loungers line the edge to Aqua, a more intimate setting designed for pure relaxation. Additionally, Sandblu’s spa, Aurora – which offers a broad spectrum of wellness and beauty treatments – also features a rejuvenating indoor pool.
Dining is an essential element of the Sandblu experience that is taken very seriously. Guests can start their day with artisanal coffee and flaky pastries at Stari Bakery, enjoy elevated Mediterranean cuisine at Platéa, indulge in modern Greek dishes and fresh seafood at Ápnea, and raise a glass to island living at Sandblu’s wine bar Ároma, as the blazing sun sets.
All of this leaves very little reason to quit the comfortable confines of Sandblu, but should you be feeling adventurous, beaches abound across the island and quaint villages beg to be explored, while the open air museum that is Ancient Thera can’t be missed for its captivating history and breathtaking views. The best part? Coming home to Sandblu.
