It was a lifetime in the making. Earlier this month, Rory McIlroy at last completed the career Grand Slam as he secured victory at the Masters in a dramatic and sensational final day of the championship. It was the Northern Irishman’s eleventh attempt at clinching the full set, and following a rollercoaster last round, he secured the feat in a historic sudden-death play-off against Justin Rose.

“There were points on the back nine where I thought, ‘have I let this slip again?’ but I responded and am really proud of myself,” said McIlroy. “It has been an emotional week so I am thrilled to be last man standing.”

As watch enthusiasts might have clocked on, it wasn’t just a sweet new green jacket that McIlroy was wearing at the presentation. To celebrate his win, and to set himself up for photos that will likely live in golfing memory for a fair few lifetimes, he slipped on the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary, a creation that was made to mark five decades since NASA astronauts gave major recognition to the watch house’s crucial role in space exploration.

This watch worn by McIlroy, a long-time wristwear fan and an Omega ambassador since 2013, has both a classic and playful feel: the blue-and-white colourway keeps everything dialled down, meanwhile there’s an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock showing Snoopy in a spacesuit. On the caseback is a depiction of the far side of the moon, with the beagle in a command and service module (CSM) that moves whenever the chronograph function is used. It is a lovely bit of symbolism for the sportsman who continued to defy the critics and kept reaching for new heights.
