Forget Tesla, and even, until we get a better look, the Aston Martin RapidE, the electric car that’ll really get petrolheads hot under the collar is coming out of Croatia – specifically, from 7-year-old marque Rimac Automobili.
Claiming to have produced the fastest electric vehicle in production anywhere in the world, Rimac have just pulled the metaphorical cover off of the Concept_One. Yes, the underscore is part of the name, and no, it’s no longer a concept but is keeping the name. Due to make its physical bow at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland next month, it’s safe to say that even Tesla’s ludicrous mode will struggle to compete with this eco-friendly supercar.
Under the hood, the 8,450-cell battery pack brings 1,088-horsepower, allowing the all-wheel drive monster to shift from 0 to 62mph in just 2.6 seconds, topping out at 220 mph. To put that into context, a Porsche 911 GT3 will get you to 60mph in 3 seconds, a Lamborghini Aventador can reach the same speed in 2.7 seconds and a McLaren 650s Spider will take 2.8 seconds to hit the benchmark.
Not all raw, brutal power though, the Concept_One also shifts down to comfort, control, drift and track driving modes and the interior is as slick as the bodywork. Aluminium and carbon fibre detailing flank a central touchscreen console, whilst the leather upholstery and decal evoke a sense of pure luxury – everything a supercar should encapsulate.
The catch? Only 8 are going into production, and undoubtedly they’ll be sold before the engine is even wired. The price has also been mooted at a hefty €740,000 ($815,554), although that could change before the ‘for sale’ sign is displayed.
