The Pick: revolutionising the espadrille
Words: Hamish Roy
First worn in the Pyrenees mountains over 4,000 years ago, the traditional jute-soled espadrille certainly isn’t lacking in heritage. It can, however, be a rather flimsy and humble-looking shoe. Yet there is change on the horizon: British brand Mulo have stepped up to give the espadrille a second lease of life with their more sturdy and stylish take on the shoe. Handmade at a Portuguese factory, and on an Oxford last, their premium espadrilles undergo 20 separate steps of construction.
In place of the traditional flat jute sole, Mulo have opted for a leather footbed inside the shoe – offering far better arch support – and crepe rubber on the outside, giving far better traction when poolside. With cobalt suede uppers trimmed in white linen braid, it’s also made in two archetypal summer hues – hopefully mirroring the azure sky under which you’ll be wearing them. It’s the perfect shoe to wear to the beach, on holiday or simply loafing park-side at your favourite café – so there’s no excuse to wear flip flops any more, gents.
