Review – Mazda 6 2.2D Sport 2013

When we were asked by Mazda if we would review the new Mazda 6, it would be fair to say that we were slightly hesitant. Isn’t that the sort of car you could imagine Ricky Gervis’s character in The Office driving, the ultimate sales rep’s company car? In short the answer is yes, this has been the Mazda 6’s past reputation. However the new Mazda 6 has laid the old reputation to bed with a car that is impressive in looks and performance, beckoning a new direction for the Japanese car manufacturer.

Our first impressions of the new car when it pulled into the car park of our London offices were good, they have really paid attention to the styling of this car, resulting in a sleek and elegant saloon. On closer inspection the level of detail in the trim and accessories is truly magnificent, with 19-inch wheels, xenon headlights, leather seats and Bose speakers, further features included keyless entry and an accurate reversing camera. Although this was the top of the range spec, the new stylish exterior and interior are more “BMW” than Mazda. It’s worth remembering that this car costs only £26,315, this level of spec in its German counterparts would cost you almost double.

The styling is not the only changes Mazda have included, the performance has had a massive overhaul also, starting with the weight, which is 75kg lighter than its predecessor. This is mainly due to the body being made out of ultra-high strength steel. This weight reduction is part of Mazda’s “SkyActive” technology, and although this sounds gimmicky, the technology delivers. The aim is to save fuel, boost energy and ensure that the maximum amount energy is directed to where it needs to be at the right time.

The new Mazda 6 comes in estate form also, with a wide range of both petrol and diesel engines.

Whilst this car is a marked improvement on it’s predecessor, it will still have some tough competition from the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. However with its new performance, styling and price, unlike before the Mazda 6 is a serious contender. mazda.com
