RESTAURANT – Plum & Spilt Milk
Words: Violet
You never would have thought that the Plum & Spilt Milk was located next to King’s Cross St Pancras station when entering the restaurant at the Great Northern Hotel. You are immediately transported from one of London’s newest public squares to an atmospheric bar that oozes with style and romance.
We ascended up the elegant, original staircase into the restaurant – a beautifully designed space that cleverly uses 120 hand-blown glass light pendants to capture the 1920s style with a modern twist.
The wonderful chef and restaurateur, Mark Sargeant, has developed an exquisite restaurant that fuses atmosphere with elegant British dishes that glide out of the kitchen in perfect form – a truly successful first venture for Mark in London. The beautiful soft leather banquette seating arrangements are of bespoke design by Milan designer, Boffi. It makes you feel like each table has been slightly enclosed for a sense of privacy, yet allow you to still enjoy the ambience of the room.
We kicked off our evening at Plum & Spilt Milk with the Taramasalata – a refreshingly light flavour, with a lemon twist that was the perfect accompaniment to the warm, fresh bread. To start, we tried the Pressed Chicken with wild herb mayonnaise. The chicken was hearty and flavoursome and when combined with the delicate mayonnaise, radish slices and watercress, it just kept us coming back for more.
For the mains, I opted for the fillets of John Dory, roast artichokes and girolles. My guest chose the 200g grass fed Angus sirloin with a side of the baked courgettes, chilli and lemon. The John Dory was cooked to perfection – tender, light and the accompaniments added a delightful set of extra layers to the dish. The Angus sirloin, was beautifully plated – not only did it look delicious, the meat melted in your mouth and was packed full of flavour. The courgettes were a fantastic addition to the meal – the chilli and lemon added a fantastic zesty kick.
We indulged in a glass of the Nero d’avola Caleo and the Ribera del Duero Roble ‘Milú’, both excellently advised by our waitress. We did of course manage to find room for dessert – the Baked Alaska with marinated cherries (for 2). Now, we all like a bit of a show, but we were not expecting to have our Alaska set on fire in front of us! It was a heavenly end to the evening with the light and airy warm meringue, with the cool cherry ice cream and additional marinated cherries on the side.
Plum & Spilt Milk is certainly one of London’s finest restaurants that has got our vote. It is the perfect setting that enables you to relax and enjoy the best of British food. Mark skilfully incorporates quality British ingredients into all of his unique dishes, as well as adding his own twist to British classics.
Whether you are in the area, want to impress a particular someone or just enjoy delicious British food, then Plum & Spilt Milk is the stylish and sophisticated restaurant that you need to visit.
