Re-invent your wardrobe with these 10 must-have pieces
Words: Charlie Thomas
Re-inventing your wardrobe is no easy thing. Over the years we may build up sentimental attachments to certain pieces of clothing, despite the fact they are practically falling apart. This makes it difficult to throw things out, but as the weather begins to change so must we.
For many, spring represents an optimistic time of rebirth and new beginnings, so as we enter this fateful period it makes perfect sense to start over. Of course, the climate has a say in this too and as it gets warmer we wear lightweight, more breathable clothing so it’s out with thick wools and tweed and in with light cottons and linen. Well-made pieces should of course be your priority though and I’d always recommend purchasing the very best quality you can – not only will it make you feel good, but something that’s been made with care will last you for years, perhaps decades if looked after correctly.
If you’re looking to re-invent your wardrobe or if you just want to add some classic pieces to your collection, here are 10 versatile pieces to begin with.
NAVY SUIT

We’ve talked before about the virtues of a navy suit. It’s the single most versatile outfit a man can own, and if you don’t have one in your wardrobe you should be ashamed. Although they look great paired together, the blazer and trousers can be worn as separates for well-executed off-duty ensembles. If you want to do this however, ensure there is a texture to the material such as this soft cotton example, which will ensure you don’t look like a banker trying to dress down his 9-5 suit on the weekend.

WHITE OXFORD SHIRT

The white oxford shirt is the only shirt you’ll ever need. Due to its soft oxford cloth cotton, this shirt is inherently casual, yet it can be worn more formally thanks to its sharp button-down collar, pleated cuffs and slim silhouette. Wear it with anything.

PENNY LOAFERS

There’s a reason why penny loafers are as stylish now as they were when your great-granddad wore them. Classic and simple in appearance, they perfectly border the line between casual and dressed up, working equally well with your navy suit or dark denim.

SEASONAL BLAZER

In autumn and winter the tweed jacket is a go-to, but the thick, insulating wool is far too heavy for when the sun rears its head; enter linen. Although you may be put off by the way linen wrinkles so easily, it’s breathability allows you to stay cool in the soaring heat, especially if unlined like this Gieves & Hawkes example.
Gieves & Hawkes Blazer, £1,295 from Matches Fashion
MACKINTOSH

As far as lightweight waterproofs go, the humble mac is an icon. Immortalised on the silver screen by the likes of Michael Caine, its a purely functional piece and one that represents the best in classic British dressing.
Beige Mac, £119.99 from H.E Mango
BROGUES

If you’re after one pair of quality leather shoes, make it the brogue. Originally created for farmers (the perforations allowed excess water to seep out), the brogue is now the definitive gentleman’s shoe. A mark of distinction, you might say.
Harvey Brogue, £205 from Herring
JEANS

If you think denim jeans are not worthy of a gentleman, think again. They were favoured by the likes of James Dean and Steve McQueen, and are your casual, weekend option. They will only get better with age, so invest in a high-grade denim that will last.
Petit New Standard Slim-Fit Jeans, £135 from Mr Porter
LEATHER JACKET

No item of clothing gives off quite a rebellious edge as a black leather biker jacket. This minimalistic one by Reiss is cut from slim leather meaning it won’t weight you down on those balmy summer evenings at the bar.
Montebello Leather Jacket, £595 from Reiss
NEUTRAL CHINOS

Neutral chinos in either a light beige or stone are as versatile as they come. Similar to dark denim jeans, they can be paired with virtually everything; just make sure the cut is slim and the cuff is rolled or hemmed with a slight taper.
Slim-Fit Chinos, £29.90 from Uniqlo
CLASSIC WATCH

A classy timepiece is the perfect complement to a well put-together outfit. Junghans specialise in pared-back design and their Max Bill collection has proven popular for its retro-inspired aesthetic. The slim case, domed Plexiglass and supple mesh strap ensure it will remain en vogue for decades to come.
Max Bill Chronoscope, £POA from Junghans
