Quartet – A Film to Gently Lift You Up

Quartet – A Film to Gently Lift You Up

‘Quartet’ is Hollywood’s answer to the success of Brit film ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. The ‘Golden Oldies’ generation is fast becoming a real market in the film industry… and although ‘Quartet’ simply can’t compare with ‘The Marigold Hotel’; it really was a pleasure to watch this film… to be allowed to join these utterly wonderful characters for a couple of hours and then quietly retreat off to ones own home all the richer for having met them. It is a joy to find a film these days that gently lifts you up, carries you off somewhere and then allows you to serenely retreat, back to the reality of our miserable wet winter but leaving a subtle warmth glowing within you.

The typical cinema experience of thrills & spills, high tension & gore, shock & horror, suspense & intense emotions… all of which we get fed in large helpings in most films… was not the ingredients in this appetizing treat. Thankfully it was devoid of all that.

Every moment spent in the company of the characters at the Home for Retired Musicians was uplifting.. probably because the profoundly admirable acting by the stellar ensemble cast, particularly from Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins… it was so brilliant that one felt charmed and honoured to be their friends. Fairly ridiculous you may think.. but if you have watched anyone dear to you grow old you will recognise the beautiful portrayal of some of the quirks of aging!!!

Add all that to a stunning setting plus an amusing script and the concoction is a very enjoyable film.
