How to pull off a check suit this season

How to pull off a check suit this season

We understand that the very idea of this can be daunting, even for the most sartorially sharp gentleman. If you’re unsure, hear us out because we’re bringing you the best and easiest ways to pull off this season’s check suits.

Subtlety is key

The last thing you want is for people to stop in the street and point and stare at the gentleman in the checked suit: it’s imperative that you blend in. By this we mean that you need to keep the rest of the outfit as quiet and calm as possible – don’t go mixing patterns, colours or textures. Pair with a pale shirt, black shoes and – if the weather permits – an overcoat.

And so is confidence

Opting to wear a check suit isn’t actually that big of a deal; it just seems that way because you’ve been wearing plain suits for your entire life. Only choose this look if you feel that you genuinely have the confidence – not arrogance – to pull it off. Like anything, if you feel great in it you’re going to look great in it, too.

Day to night (and on weekends)

Check suits – suits in general, actually – don’t need to be purely reserved for the working week. Too many men shy away from wearing a sharp suit on the weekend or at night because they’re afraid that it will look ‘too smart’. We’re gentlemen, remember, and therefore we can never be too smart. Dress the suit down with a pair of slip-ons (check out Diemme) and a sharp white T-shirt.

It needs to fit you

This rule applies to all gentlemen – no matter what they are wearing. It’s imperative that a suit is tailored for you – or at least that you’ve got roughly the right size on. What is the point in spending how ever many hundreds of pounds on a suit that doesn’t even fit you? It looks awful and it’s absolutely no way for a gentleman to dress.

And you need to spend time on it

If you’re trying out this look, it’s important that you spend time on picking the perfect suit. You don’t want to end up picking something hideous – just because you can’t really be bothered to look at what’s out there. With every decent investment a gentleman makes, you must take time, do your research and – most importantly – try before you buy.
