Property of the Week: L’île d’Anges, the Bahamas

An island paradise in the world's bluest waters? Well, if you insist...

There are 365 islands in the Exuma region of the Bahamas — as if God made one for each day of the year. And the place itself is certainly heavenly enough. Utterly pristine turquoise waters shimmer below the Azure sky, while little slithers of green, fringed by palm-lined sands and soft lapping waters, dot the horizon. This is a safe haven, alright — a private paradise which has never looked more appealing.

L’ile d’Anges (known locally as Goat Cay) is just one of these unique little islets — an exquisitely landscaped 20 acres with around 1.3 miles of water frontage. In the centre of the island, sandwiched between two beautiful white sandy beaches, is the main residence — a proud but understated villa in an elevated position above the ocean water. What’s more, it’s a true rarity in the region. As Edward de Morgan Mallet at Knight Frank explains: “There are very few ‘turn-key’ private islands for sale in the Bahamas which can showcase living accommodation and design of such high quality and on such a naturally beautiful island.”

The main house itself is characterised by a bright, clean architectural style that complements the tropical grandeur of the surroundings. There’s a certain Mediterranean air to the whitewashed walls of the observation tower and the cool internal courtyard, while the truly open plan accommodation seamlessly melds the inside and outside worlds.

Almost 5,000 square feet of verandas and passageways skirt and connect the eight pods of the home, creating a sense of both intimacy and volume — a trend that continues through the grand living rooms and stunning bedrooms of the residence.

But perhaps the most compelling spaces, at least to our party-minded sensibilities, are the two round yurts that sit down by the tranquil waters of the beach. Though they could well be used as guest accommodation for those who wish to be lulled to sleep by the ocean waves, they’d do a handy job as a serious entertaining space — think fresh seafood, good wine, bad singing — should your friends pop over unannounced for a summer jaunt. And, with a place like this, they almost certainly will.
