The Pick: The ultimate summer polo shirt

The Pick: The ultimate summer polo shirt

Words: Hamish Roy

Looking around him while at a friend’s birthday party in 2005, photographer Adam Brown couldn’t help but notice a distinct trend: the women sitting poolside looked great, the men did not. In spite of the fact that many of these men were affiliated with the world of design – and thus people who could be said to have an aptitude for style – they were clad in baggy, shapeless and tired looking garments. It was a problem that befalls many a gentleman: the style that came easily in other aspects of life didn’t translate to their holiday wear.

Adam went on to found Orlebar Brown, which takes a more considered approach to beach and resort wear, channeling the style of 1960’s poolside utopia. Made in premium towelling, the Terry polo shirt is reminiscent of those worn in the 60’s by various gentleman of note; Picasso would wear one while on the Côte d’Azur, Bond while poolside in Goldfinger. A luxuriously soft material, towelling only improves with wear. With its slim silhouette, open collar and clean look, the Terry achieves elegance through understatement – a refreshing change from the logo-heavy polo shirts on offer today.
