Words: Gentleman's Journal
‘Where’s the collar?’, people asked. So says Henry Hales – the man who founded Sir Plus with a modest investment and a market stall in Spitalfields selling boxer shorts made from offcuts strewn under various London cutting tables. He is, of course, speaking about the brand’s now signature style – the Nehru collar. Popularised by Jawaharlal Nehru, ex-Prime Minister of India, the jacket features a distinctive mandarin collar and – as we quickly approach the 128 anniversary of Nehru’s birth, what better time to feature his sartorial legacy?
Available online & at Portobello market, Sir Plus’ Nehru jackets stand out from the crowd and are cut from Pure Wool or have a Cashmere blend. The collection also features Velvet. Each Nehru Jacket also features spacious patch pockets, welt pockets, some with contrasting colours & of course coconut buttons. And, to perpetuate Sir Plus’ natural feel, the jacket is offered in a range of neutral colours, with some of the new shades being Navy with Espresso, Frost Grey, and Indigo.
‘Initially people find a Nehru jacket a bit of a statement,’ Henry Hales tells Gentleman’s Journal. ‘But, when you try them on you see how easy they are to wear. They’re far more interesting than a blazer or jacket and can be worn with jeans, chinos or even suit trousers.’
