Could this be the best cocktail in London…?
Words: Patrick
A few years back, while working for another equally esteemed title, I was sent into the heart of Perthshire to review a hotel. It was awesome in every way – Kinloch House, I cannot recommend it enough. Anyway, I was set to file 1,000 words, taking into account all the usual information you’d expect from a glossy publication review. Instead, I filed a piece about a panna cotta I ate at supper – it was truly the best thing I’d ever put in my mouth.
I waxed lyrical about its smoothness, told many of my friends over social media that evening and still to this day hold fond memories of those precious mouthfuls. Unfortunately, since that supper the ether regions of my palate have remained relatively untouched, waiting patiently in a dormant state for something to come along and give them a good spanking. And then, this weekend, it happened…
It came in the form of a cocktail from Farringdon’s Piano Works: an Almond and Hazelnut Sour. I’m not totally sure what went into it, although I did see an egg white oozing its way into the glass (even the body builders amongst you can’t complain) accompanied by Disaronno, yet what I do know is that as soon as it hit my lips I was reawakened, cantering back through the months to that panna cotta moment north of the border.
I wanted to bath in it, slug it every day I walk the earth, lick the insides of the glass like an over zealous Labrador and learn the exact ingredients and finesse behind its taste, flavour and epiphany provision. Opened in the past month, and perched pleasantly close to the City hubs and high-rises, I urge, nay demand you drop into this chipper venue and order one of these cocktails. Perhaps four.
Oh… and The Piano Works’ team running the whole shebang are great, you’re greeted with a glass of bubbly on arrival, the live improv band are your playlist to interact with – everything from Frank Sinatra to Britney Spears made an appearance – the bouncers are dressed as West Country farmers rather than The Men in Black, and the food’s worth shouting about as well.
But that bloody cocktail!
