In one of the biggest horology moves in recent times, Patek Philippe has lifted the lid on its first brand-new range since the launch of the Twenty~4, a women’s line, in 1999. The latest collection, billed as the Cubitus, is instantly recognisable with its square-shape case that’s softened by rounded corners – an effect that blends ‘the square, the circle and the octagon’ – and a dial complete with horizontal, embossed reliefs.
The line is made up of three models, with the trio intended to ‘offer a new reinterpretation of the “elegant sporty” style.’ Two come in steel cases – the more prosaic-looking one is done out with a green sunburst dial (Reference 5821/1A-001); the other features rose-gold, creating a rich, throwback appearance, and is offset by a blue sunburst dial (Reference 5821/1AR-001) – and the flagship piece is made from platinum, with a loaded triple-hit face design: a date towards the top, and moon phase/day display and seconds counter towards the bottom (Reference 5822P-001).

When it comes to power, most notable is that the platinum model is fuelled by a new caliber self-winding movement – for which Patek has filed six patent applications.
Further visual interest is provided by the contrasting finishes: whereas there’s a vertical satin-brushed finish on the case front, it’s counterbalanced by the case flanks and chamfer, which are polished. For final details, the horizontal styling found on the dial is also seen on the rotors and mini-rotors of the in-house movements.
