Why this non-alcoholic wine is worthy of your cellar
Light and vibrant, Nooh by La Coste might be changing the game
Words: Charlie Bentley
Whether you’re a serious collector or you just like to enjoy a drop with dinner, the zero-alcohol-wine market has, on the whole, been rather flat. Many of us who want to imbibe something of high quality, but don’t want the haziness, often find ourselves relegated to the limited soft section of the drinks list, which is commonly far from the sophisticated profiles we crave.
Nooh by La Coste (from the team behind Château La Coste) changes all that. The Provence-based estate has developed a non-alcoholic bottle that’s so impressive, it might just inspire everyone to volunteer as the designated driver the next time there’s a night-out on the cards.
A combination of ‘no’ (for non-drinkers) and ‘OH’ (the chemical symbol for the alcohol molecule), it is a singular creation that’s the result of three years of research underpinned by the vineyard’s winemaking know-how – and is available in both sparkling and still rosé versions.

How’s it made?
Unlike many non-alcoholic wines that lose their character during the alcohol-extraction process, Nooh retains its complex profile through a technique known as vacuum distillation. This comprises the alcohol being removed at a low temperature (35–40°C), which preserves the wine’s full aromatic potential.
Importantly, Nooh is not just a product of science, but is also a pretty good expression of Château La Coste’s dedication to quality winemaking. Set on a 200-hectare estate that features olive trees, oaks and cypresses, the vineyard benefits from Provence’s rich biodiversity. Each bottle is a reflection of the label’s commitment to organic-farming practices and sustainable viticulture: the approach may limit production quantity, but it ensures that each wine – alcoholic or non-alcoholic – distills the unique terroir of the region.
The aroma
Expect to be greeted by a nose bursting with the scents of grapefruit and strawberry, as well as classic hits of the renowned Rosé d’une Nuit cuvée. These aromas are complemented by subtle hints of lemon and jasmine, creating a pretty inviting, vibrant bouquet.
The taste
With only 3.5g of residual sugar, the result is something that is light and refreshing, without the cloying sweetness found in other options. Specifically, it’s round, fruit-forward, and balanced elegantly and harmoniously.
