When it hit the big screen in 2000, American Psycho – the film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s early-1990s novel – fused itself tightly into cinema pop culture with its nods to Huey Lewis and the News, its Valentino tailoring, Christian Bale’s wild portrayal of fictional serial killer Patrick Bateman, and the film’s opening sequence about one man’s rigorous morning routine.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that a fresh spin on Ellis’s book is in the works – below, we lay out what we know so far about the production.
Who will be directing the new American Psycho?

In October, it was announced that Luca Guadagnino will be in the main chair. The Italian, 53, has form when it comes to translating works of literature into film; some of his most famous projects – Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All, and Queer – are rooted in books.
“Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP,” said the chair of Lionsgate, the production studio behind the upcoming film.
Who will be starring in the new American Psycho?

Following much speculation, the lead role of Patrick Bateman – the investment banker who moonlights as an unhinged murderer – has been assigned to Austin Butler. His verve for smooth-talking (Elvis) mixed with his ability to portray on-edge characters (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood; Dune: Part Two) suggests he’s the right pick. The rest of the cast is yet to be confirmed.
What will the new American Psycho be about?
Again, not too much has been disclosed – all that’s reported so far is that rather than remake the 2000 classic, Guadagnino will take Ellis’s book and push it through his own prism.
When will the new American Psycho be released?
No word on a release date yet – and production is yet to start – but some have pointed to 2026.
