How to choose a New York neighbourhood

How to choose a New York neighbourhood

It’s a big job moving to the Big Apple, and you’re in the majority if you’re absolutely lost about where to move; you know you’re not moving to Harlem, Queens, or The Bronx, as Hollywood’s already told you that’s a bad idea, but there are still so many neighbourhoods from which to choose. We’ve made that choice slightly easier for you.

The Upper East Side

For the wealthy gentleman with a family.

A mix of entrenched Old Money types and affluent young families, that put down roots in gorgeous townhouses and stately apartments on Park and Fifth Avenue, this is the Mayfair of NYC. Doormen stand on red carpets outside opulent entrances, awaiting polished chauffeured cars, that shimmer with style and class. If this sounds like your sort of place, and it should, then The Upper East Side is your hood.

For the more arty of the affluent, Museum Mile boasts world-famous names such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, whilst some of the very best hotels in the world are dotted around the neighbourhood. You’re also in one of the safest areas in the city, so you can rest easy at night. That’s unless you fear being mown down by one of the neighbourhood’s ubiquitous double prams. You’ve been warned.

The Upper West Side

For the affluent gentleman with an inquisitive mind.

More diverse and far less stuffy than its eastern counterpart, the Upper West Side would make a wonderful home for a discerning gentleman, craving a more metropolitan lifestyle. A ‘New Money’ haven rather than a refuge for the old, this neighbourhood offers a similar degree of luxury to the Upper West Side with a little bit less prestige to those living on the other side of Central Park. In NYC Monopoly it’s the Park Lane to the Upper West Side’s Mayfair.

For the more inquisitive, scientifically minded gentlemen, there’s a wonderful selection of museums, such as the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Historical Society, and the Rose Centre for Earth and Space; that’s not to say the area’s without its artsy types however – far from it. For your dose of the arts, visit the Metropolitan Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall, or the New York City Opera. You might even bump into the next big thing, as the world-acclaimed Julliard School is right around the corner.

Williamsburg

For the gentleman who’s right on trend.

Situated in Brooklyn, that’s not on Manhattan Island for those less acquainted with New York, Williamsburg has become a haven for those gentlemen priced out of a expensive home in the city. If you’re a fan of music, arts, and an enviable nightlife, then Williamsburg is the place for you, with youthful creative types abound. For the New York hipster contingent and the more pretentious of the creative professionals, there’s definitely an air of the fashion forward and the musically obscure.

Chelsea and the Meatpacking District

For the gentleman who likes to party.

Returning to Manhattan, Chelsea is similar to Williamsburg in being the haunt of the artsier and trendier gentlemen of New York, but different in that there’s far less shame about the relative affluence that permeates the neighbourhood. Wildly different styles of architecture, bars, and prestigious clothing shops can all be found on the same street, really emphasising the degree of diversity that’s on show in this district. If trying new foods every day, partying into the early hours, and meeting an exceptionally varied range of people is what you’re looking for, you’ll be right at home here.

Tribeca

For the gentleman who’d like to settle down.

Home to Robert De Niro’s internationally renowned Tribeca Film Festival, this neighbourhood in particular has seen its stock rise faster than if it were backed by Warren Buffet. With one of its zip codes named the 12th wealthiest in the United States, you won’t be playing around with a property in Tribeca. Replete with families and gentleman after a quieter, more composed environment, you won’t be at a loss in finding grocery stores, shops and boutiques, and the area’s also famed for its highly regarded and extremely varied restaurants. It’s a wonderfully safe microcosm of New York City and with a well-justified price tag.
