Our world is constantly evolving and over time the human race has had a detrimental effect on what planet Earth looks like today. Although some of our impact has been negative, we have also created numerous awe-inspiring constructions that display skill and determination. Some of the most amazing sights were created by nature, however, so what follows is a combined list of the most beautiful modern day wonders of the world.
COLOSSEUM – ROME, ITALY, , A hallmark of Rome and one of the most famous landmarks of Italy, the Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the world. Today it is partially ruined, but it continues to offer a fascinating glimpse into what the height of the Roman Empire might have looked like.
TAJ MAHAL – AGRA, INDIA, , Constructed of white marble and featuring plenty of intricate detail, the Taj Mahal took over 20 years to be built. It was worth the wait though, as the finished product is one that is considered by many to be the finest example of Mughal architecture.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA – NORTHERN BORDERS, CHINA , , A true marvel of construction, the Great Wall of China is so great that it can reportedly be seen from space. In total, the walls that make up this incredible achievement measure over 10 miles long.
GREAT BARRIER REEF – QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, , Located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. It’s home to some of the most colourful underwater treats, but despite its mammoth size of roughly 130,000 square miles, it has lost half of its capacity since 1985.
GRAND CANYON – ARIZONA, USA, , Having been sculpted by the Colorado River more than 15 million years ago, the Grand Canyon is as old as it is stunning. It has depths of up to one mile, making it a truly incredible spectacle for the thousands of tourists that visit it every year.
IGUAZU FALLS – MISIONES, ARGENTINA AND PARANA STATE, BRAZIL, , A series of spectacular waterfalls on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls boasts the second largest water flow rate to Niagra Falls, but it’s arguably an even more impressive sight.
GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA – GIZA, EGYPT, , The only surviving member of the original ancient wonders of the world, the Great Pyramid of Giza is quite simply, astounding. Built at around 2500 BC, it’s almost impossible to imagine just how it was constructed by hand.
