During last year's Big Summer of Sport (the Olympics, the Euros, etc, etc), one tournament still managed to stand out among them all. Wimbledon is now in its 137th edition, with its origins dating back to 1877, yet the furore and enthusiasm for the action down at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club is as electric as ever.
With plenty of action on the courts, the event has seen the starriest and hypiest turn out in years. The likes of Hugh Grant, Stormzy, Margot Robbie and even ‘Brat summer’ instigator Charli XCX traded in the day jobs for a seat in the stands, while outside there were not only snaking queues for tickets but also overnight camping.
Tennis itself is having a bit of a moment, even away from SW19. Challengers, the big-screen flick starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, sent temperatures and tennis balls soaring earlier this year, causing some of the biggest designers to go all tennis-core (polo shirts galore at Bottega Veneta, Prada, etc) and normal guys to hedge their bets down at the local tennis courts. There’s been a rise in bookings at courts across London – one angered friend hasn’t managed to find an open slot for weeks – and everybody is trying their footing at being a lawn pro.
To be a pro, though, you’ve got to dress like one, which means you need some decent shoes. We had a shop around to find the tennis shoes that not only do the job on the court, but also have some style to them. From Asics’s super-sleek Court FF to Nike’s classic NikeCourt Lites, these are the best men's tennis trainers that will give you some bounce, and maybe even get you into Wimbledon (without the overnight camping).
