Luxury London: where every gentleman needs to shop
Words: India Gladstone
There is a common theme that stereotypically runs throughout men the world over: that they hate shopping. Machismo has a lot to do with it – a lot of men don’t think that it’s ‘manly’ or right to enjoy shopping, which is absolutely ridiculous. No gentleman should feel this way; he should feel comfortable in his own skin and not be afraid to admit that shopping is actually an enjoyable activity. For those who genuinely don’t like shopping; perhaps you need to reassess where you’re going? Maybe the issue isn’t so much that you don’t actually like shopping – more that you’re not exploring the right areas. For every gentleman who enjoys the finer things in life; where are the most luxurious shopping streets in London?
MOUNT STREET
Mount Street is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious and beautiful streets in the city. The street comes complete with wide roads, incredible buildings and some of the best shops in the world. Mount Street is so luxurious that you’ll want to dress up specifically to walk down it. While you’re there, head to Richard Mille for some of the finest watches a man can buy, Purdey and William & Son for guns like no other and Douglas Hayward for a beautiful bespoke suit.
SAVILE ROW
Savile Row should be the first stop in any gentleman’s luxury London visit and for good reason: you’ll have access to some of the best suits in the world, designed specifically for you. The world famous street can be a bit of a minefield at first glance; so first head to Gieves & Hawkes, Hardy Aimes and Richard James and we guarantee your life will become just a little more luxurious.
JERMYN STREET
There’s something so wonderfully old-London about Jermyn street; it contains some of the city’s oldest shops and one instantly feels the history of the street the moment they step onto it. Germany Street is fit for the finest gentleman and is host of a plethora of incredible luxury stores such as Dunhill, Church’s, Floris and Turnbull & Asser.
SOUTH MOLTON STREET
South Molton street is actually quite understated in comparison to some of the other places we’ve outlined in this guide. Don’t let that take away from the incredible luxury institutions on offer though; Browns and Incontex – to name just a few – should never be missed out from a shopping trip.
NEW BOND STREET
A stone’s through from South Molton Street is the impeccable and world-renowned New Bond Street. This street well and truly defines luxury; not only because of the beautiful buildings and impeccably dressed and affluent people who frequent it, but also because it’s home to some of the world’s most extravagant shops: Hermès, Boodles and Louis Vuitton, to name but three.
KNIGHTSBRIDGE
No luxury London guide would be complete without including Knightsbridge and the area as a whole is possibly the most luxurious in the capital. Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Motcomb Street and Sloane Street together hold some of the most incredible and lavish shops in the world, from Christian Louboutin, to Burberry, to Rolex and absolutely everything in-between.
