What we’re looking forward to on Netflix this April
Everything you'll want to watch this month
Words: Henry St Leger
Oh Netflix. As much as we love its expansive catalogue, sifting through those endless lists of titles is a pain – not to mention a mood-kill for those relaxed nights in on the sofa. To save your time (and your sanity), we’ve picked out this month’s new releases that we’re most excited to see.
Louis CK’s functionally-titled ‘2017’ stand-up special, exclusive to Netflix, looks like more of the same bleak, self-deprecating humour we’ve come to expect from the American comedian. You can find his acerbic wit in any number of other sitcoms (Louie, Baskets, Horace and Pete), but the award-laden stand-up is truly in his element onstage. Streaming from April 4th.
With British stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, A Single Man) and Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) helming this Iraq War drama, Sand Castle has certainly built up some hype – but will the political baggage around this contentious conflict knock it down? Streaming from April 21st.
The endlessly popular children’s presenter from the 90s, Bill Nye, returns with a rebooted talk show for all things science. His brand of accessible, comedic demonstrations won him fans in classrooms across the world – in an age plagued by fake news and untrustworthy sources, ‘The Science Guy’ is needed more than ever. Streaming from April 21st
This highly divisive film from Drive director Nicolas Winding-Refn follows the glitzy fortunes of young starlet Jesse (Elle Fanning). It might not have the depth of Natalie Portman in Black Swan (also on Netflix), but with theatrical audiences torn between standing ovations and loud booing, the jury is still out on this stylish psychological thriller. Streaming from April 15th.
Based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel, this faithful adaptation stars Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson as ‘the help’ in a distinguished – but politically conflicted – British estate in the run-up to WWII. Where will their loyalties lie? Streaming from April 12th.
Whether or not you liked the recent reboot, this silly supernatural caper expanded on the original to create a definitive piece of 80s pop culture. As worthy of a revisit as ever. Streaming from April 5th.
