Yesterday, LG announced they will be releasing a massive new addition at the CES 2014: the Ultra HD 105-inch curved television. And let me tell you, it has got people excited. There are several things that stand out about this set and they can all be garnered from the name.
Ultra HD? This means that it is four times the resolution of HD – specifically 11-million pixels with 5,120 x 2,160 – creating a picture that is true and pure with lightening fast motions in spectacular clarity. Next detail that caught our eye was the 105-inch screen. Now, once you picture your televisions at home then gage how much larger this will be in comparison, it’s a pretty imposing structure. But it is not only the magnitude of the screen that sets this television apart from others in its field, it also boasts an ultra wide 21:9 aspect ratio screen. With conventional television sets featuring a 16:9 aspect ratio, this screen is much wider and is specially built to give the cinematic feel. LG have even made sure that there is very little or no letterboxing, giving the viewer the best possible cinematic experience.
The third thing we notice is the curved nature of the screen. LG claims that this change avoids distortion of the picture because all parts are equidistance from the viewers’ eyes. This careful curvature neatly envelopes the field of sight to the centre of the action.
This visionary television is stepping away from the norm with its use of LCD panel technology instead of OLED. This departure was not an easy one and the LG designers had to get a little help from LG Display to overcome issues with uneven backlighting. They did it though and they only question now is, will this television sell?
With the large cinematic screen only appealing to a small section of consumers that, if past trends are anything to go by, usually prefer projectors for their cinematic experience, it remains to be seen whether LG have made a worthy investment. In the meantime, it makes quite a spectacular sight, doesn’t it?
