Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg design their own IWC watches

Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton and multiple race winner Nico Rosberg have unveiled their brand new, signature IWC timepieces.

Each watch will be limited to just 250 pieces, and both of them feature unique design elements that have been individually tailored to the respective drivers. IWC have sponsored the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team for the last two seasons, with these releases displaying a commitment to both the drivers and the team itself.

Both watches are Ingenieur Chronographs, IWC’s flagship sports watch. Lewis Hamilton’s is constructed from a highly technical, light grey satin-finished titanium. In contributed to the overall design, he ‘wanted to have a watch that featured a lot of technology’, and as such his timepiece utilises materials found in Formula One. This is seen in the carbon fibre dial, zirconium oxide screw heads and rugged titanium bracelet, which is a first for IWC.

Nico’s watch also features the satin-finished titanium dial, yet he chose to take on a sportier feel. This is seen in the embossed calfskin and rubber strap, as well as the neon yellow hands, which reference his trademark racing helmet. The silver-plated dial adds an interesting contrast against the darker titanium and the black of the outer dial an the case-back features his personal logo. Both watches are powered by IWC’s innovative 89361 calibre movement, which is one of the most efficient and reliable they produce.

The CEO of IWC, Georges Kern said, ‘Lewis and Nico are not only unique personalities and incredibly successful sportsmen but also very creative. They were both immediately very interested in the idea of launching two limited edition watches. I’m confident that these unusual timepieces will be equally popular with motorsport enthusiasts and watch connoisseurs’. We don’t doubt him for a second.
