No you have not read that incorrectly and no this is not an advert for the new James Bond film, this technology is real, pioneering and totally revolutionary. Land Rover announced this morning that they are developing trailblazing technology which they have called the “Transparent Bonnet”. A virtual imaging concept, it will allow drivers a digital view of the terrain ahead making the front of the car ‘virtually invisible’. This state of the art technological development means that drivers are enabled a visual capacity unlike any car before it, being able to see exactly what is underneath and directly in front of the vehicle there in by avoiding hidden obstacles.

So how does it work? Well, it is, as you would expect, all through the use of cleverly placed cameras. By positioning them in the car’s grille, they are able to capture data used to feed a Head-Up Display creating a ‘see through’ view of the terrain through the bonnet and engine bay.

Excitingly, this advanced technology is completely unrivalled and, what’s more, the Transparent Bonnet is just one element of a suite of new concepts being showcased in Land Rover’s Discovery Vision Concept car at the New York International Motor Show on 16th April.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover said: “We believe the next 25 years will be the most exciting and dynamic the automotive industry has ever experienced. There will be huge strides in environmental innovation, in safety and capability.

“As our vehicles become more capable and autonomous off-road, we will ensure the driver has the confidence to allow the car to continue to progress, over any terrain. We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Bonnet to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of an urban car park.”
