Lamborghini has produced some rather interesting small production-run cars as of late, with the Veneno being a particular low point when it comes to ghastly styling. This concept, designed in collaboration with Italian coachbuilders, Zagato, is more than a step forward though, mixing Lamborghini’s now trademark angles with more curved lines, which are reminiscent of the sports cars of yesteryear.
Lamborghini and Zagato first paired up 50 years ago and have since had a number of collaborations, but the 5-95 is arguably their prettiest yet. Conceived to celebrate the coachbuilder’s 95th anniversary, the 5-95 is based on the now defunct Gallardo LP570-4, so it packs the same 562bhp V10 engine, which propels the car from 0-60mph in around 3.5 seconds. Although it features nearly identical performance figures, it is of course its looks that mark it out as a truly special piece of automotive art. The overall silhouette of the car is familiar but the swooping lines of the floating roof and the inviting gape of the open front grille give it a decidedly retro feel. Combined with the angular side vents and rear quad exhausts, the classically styled underpinnings of the 5-95 turn out to be really quite stunning.
Unfortunately, for now the 5-95 will remain as a unique one-off museum piece, but if interest is sufficient there is a chance that more will be made. It would of course cost a ridiculous sum of money, but the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato Concept will become a modern classic and with looks this good, we can only hope that more will make production.
