“My LaFerrari could just do with being a little bit quicker,” are words seldom, if ever, spoken in the supercar world, but the engineering boffins at Ferrari seem to think the Maranello masterpiece could do with a boost. The already ferociously fast LaFerrari has been substantially overhauled to produce a track-only version of the V12 hybrid called the – read this one carefully – LaFerrari FXXK.
Created exclusively for the track, the FXXK uses the same V12 hybrid powerplant found in a standard road-going LaFerrari, only it churns out 101bhp more. With a total output of 1036bhp, the FXXK is a full five seconds faster around Ferrari’s private Fiorano test track.
The car is the latest instalment in Ferrari’s XX programme, which is designed to test the Italian automakers future road-car technology in a series of no-rules, track-only racers, which are only made available to a few pre-selected buyers. Previous models have included the Enzo-based FXX and 599XX.
Differentiating itself from the existing fleet of XX cars is the ‘K’ suffix, which stands for Kenetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). As with the set-up on F1 cars, this provides the FXXK with an extra boost of power and torque, just in case over 1000bhp wasn’t quite enough.
Even more appetising than the performance figures, however, is the FXXK’s styling. With more aero additions than an Airbus A380, the FXXK relies on a twin-profile front splitter, a vast rear diffuser and twin devil horn-like spoiler blades to help it defy the laws of physics.
Launched at the Ferrari World Finals in Abu Dhabi, the company confirmed that no more than 40 examples of the FXXK will be produced. With each car costing the pre-selected ‘Client-Test Driver’ – it’s impossible to own the car as Ferrari won’t let them out of its sight – a cool £1.9million, £100k less than McLaren is asking for its P1 GTR Programme. Thinking about buying one? Well, think again as Ferrari has already sold all 40 to “clients from all over the world,” says Ferrari spokesperson, Nicola Boari. Better get in quick next time, gentlemen, this beast moves fast.
