Introducing: Carbon Flyer Drone
Words: Guy Aubrey Devito
Unless you’ve been living a cave for the past year, you’ll have noticed that drones have become a bit of a thing – and no, I’m not talking about their usefulness in incinerating Islamists as they drive through the Registan Desert. One of the most exciting new drones is the Carbon Flyer Drone; A durable, extremely fast drone that is the first ever commercial one to be made entirely from carbon fibre.
The Carbon Flyer Drone is extremely versatile and as well as its speed it has agility in abundance. It has a camera mounted on it at and it can record the ground below, even while travelling at very high speeds. It can be controlled by your phone which reduces costs and the need to carry around a cumbersome, battery operated remote control.
As well as its tough carbon fibre exterior it has an ultra-low drag ‘delta-wing’ design, that enables the machine to reach those top, top speeds and also provides excellent control. The Carbon Flyer Drone utilises dual high power motors with differential thrust to steer, and is controlled through long range Bluetooth 4.0 by a smartphone app. Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are included and will provide a lengthy flight time. Additionally, the Carbon Flyer airframe is assembled using a carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy which creates bonds that are to all intents and purposes unbreakable. It is the world’s first mainstream product to utilise the properties of this amazing and hardy material technology.
The Carbon Flyer has what initially seems to be a rather strange accessory; a durable plastic nose cone. This is used to both protect the drone, should it crash head first at speed – and also to ensure that if it hits anybody or any valuable property, it won’t do too much harm.
Put forward by the crowdfunding site Indiegogo, the Carbon Flyer drone has already exceeded the $50,000 requirement needed to get the concept into commercial production. We can only wait with bated breath for this terrific machine to go on general sale.
