How to include countryside class in your wardrobe
Stay stylish even when you're away from the city
Words: Gentleman's Journal
Keeping up with the latest trends within men’s fashion can be a time-consuming and occasionally confusing exercise. From a 2017 hit being utility clothing where comfort is key, to the return of the rugby shirt, to pink being big in menswear, the discerning gentleman has an almost dizzying array of options available to him.
Whilst this is all well and good, adding a few key items to your wardrobe which are timeless classics can make things so much simpler, and can give you great options in terms of your potential combinations.
One area which has provided us with many items that remain as stylish now as they have ever been is that of the country gentleman. It’s a niche which combines the debonair and suave with the practical and durable. These are all elements that country outfitter, E.J. Churchill, have on show throughout their range and are easy to include in your daily wardrobe.
An all-time classic of the rural wardrobe is the Barbour wax jacket, from a world-renowned brand that’s over 100 years old. The medium-weight Gamefair jacket from Barbour is a modern take on the traditional, is as functional as it is stylish, and would be a fantastic addition to any gentleman’s wardrobe.
Underneath, there are numerous options to consider. One of our favourites is the Schoffel Banbury Shirt in a subtle green and pink check. This can be combined with jeans for a casual look or chinos for smarter occasions, and it also goes brilliantly underneath Illan’s Cashmere Reversible Gilet or Schoffel’s Cashmere V Neck.
Looking further down your ensemble, E.J.’s Carrera Trousers are another versatile option which match with any or all of the previous products. They also go together well alongside a classical sports jacket or just a polo shirt in the summer months.
Any outfit with a countryside twist would be rounded off superbly with the addition of a smart, sophisticated shoe. The brogue has been a popular choice for many years and the Herring Reading shoe is made with full leather lining, insole and suede upper. Day-to-day these will serve any gentleman well and given the craftsmanship and quality of leather, they will last for years.
Whatever your preference when it comes to style, and whatever trends you hear about for 2017, it is always well worth revisiting a style as timeless as that of the country gentlemen – after all, it’s timeless for a good reason.
