Words: Gentleman's Journal
A man’s first foray in to the world of fine watches can be an exciting but slightly confusing moment. With such a profusion of brands, styles and movements on offer, it can be hard to know what is right – and, perhaps more importantly, what is within reach. Tourbillon watches are undeniably beguiling; indeed, they often represent the pinnacle of watchmaking. However, as one might imagine, a watch that boasts of a ‘grand complication’ will hardly come cheap. This selection, on the other hand, still contains some of the finest watches in the business, but ones that make for a more realistic investment when taking a first step in to the horological world. Moreover, they’ll work in tandem with an active and adventurous lifestyle, featuring refined yet functional design that forgoes excessive ornamentation – something that can lead to equally pricey repairs.
Tag Heuer Aqua Racer
As its name suggests, the Aqua Racer was designed to withstand all the rigours of watersport, and with shock- and water-resistance (the latter to 30o metres), it’s about as solid a watch as one could hope for. It has a classic maritime look with a black dial, gunmetal grey hands and luminous markings that maximise readability underwater. Unashamedly a sports watch, it will go anywhere and survive almost anything – but it has real presence too, and can be dressed up as easily as it can down. And with an automatic chronograph accurate to 1/10th of a second, it’s not short in the precision department either.
