How to get the perfect haircut

How to get the perfect haircut

Words: Gentleman's Journal

It’s a point we’ve drummed home on numerous occasions, but the details really do make a huge difference to your overall style. The way a blazer hugs (or doesn’t hug) your shoulders, the kind of shoes you adorn your feet with, and your choice of bag all have the ability to either make you look cool and well put-together, or sloppy and careless (in a bad way). Your choice of haircut is perhaps the thing that can most drastically change your appearance though. Just take a look at star DJ Calvin Harris a few years ago compared with his most recent reincarnation of himself. The point is, the perfect haircut is something we should all strive towards. Here are a few tips on how to achieve it.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Scouring the interweb for inspiration is no bad thing. By looking at as many images of hairstyles as possible, you’ll gain a better understanding of what you like and what you don’t like. Many people take to film for inspiration, and this is actually how many (hair) trends begin. Once you’ve seen a style you like, Google it and you’ll eventually discover a number of variations and twists on that original cut, some may be better and some worse, but chances are you’ll find one for you.

KNOW WHAT SUITS YOU

We’ve previously discussed the importance of choosing a hairstyle that’ll suit your face shape. But you’ll also want to go with a cut that suits your overall style and, more importantly, one that you feel confident with. Similar to the clothes you wear, if you’re not confident in how you look then, chances are, you won’t be pulling it off.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT BARBERSHOP

There’s no point in having a solid idea of what you want to go for if you end up visiting a two-bit barbershop. Again, research is key here; look at reviews online and check out prices prior to booking so you won’t be shocked when it comes to paying up. If you want some some advice, here’s our shout of the best barbers in London.

TALK WITH YOUR BARBER

Communication is key. Ask your barber questions, get a conversation going and he’ll (hopefully) offer his advice in an eloquent manner that will only benefit you.

SHOW A PICTURE TO YOUR BARBER

If you struggle articulating your words then showing a picture of the exact style you want is a surefire way of getting on the same page as your barber.
