How Frescobol Carioca is making stylish sustainability a reality

From climate change and plastic pollution to rising sea temperatures, it’s not news to anyone that our environment is in crisis – and that we should all be making changes to do what we can to protect it. However, with a problem on such a massive scale it can be hard to know what you, as an individual, can do to help.
Well, one obvious place to start is your wardrobe. Wasteful production processes, chemical dyes and the micro-plastics produced from washing clothes at home mean the fashion industry is a big culprit when it comes to environmental damage. One brand that is taking steps to clean up the fashion industry’s act, however, is Frescobol Carioca.
Sustainability has been at the heart of this Brazilian-inspired brand since the beginning. When the company launched in 2013, it was with a collection of beach bats handcrafted from sustainably sourced wood offcuts produced by the Brazilian furniture industry – an ethos which now extends to its swimwear and clothing lines.
With its recently launched Resort ’19 collection, Frescobol Carioca has introduced organic cotton pieces to its loungewear line. The use of natural materials, like cotton and linen, is essential for reducing the amount of harmful plastic fibres entering the oceans, with the added benefit that these materials are often longer lasting as well as being both recyclable and biodegradable.
In addition, to this Frescobol Carioca is making an increasing amount of its collections from Tencel. This eco-friendly textile is created from eucalyptus sap and is biodegradable, as well as being lightweight, wrinkle-resistant and fast-drying, making it perfect for the brand’s travel-ready wear-anywhere designs.
Of course, being truly sustainable doesn’t start and end simply with materials. Frescobol Carioca has also invested in a dedicated in-house research and development team focused on finding ways to make the brand more environmentally friendly. This has resulted in key behind-the-scenes decisions, such as manufacturing clothing in Europe to reduce the carbon footprint from transportation, focusing on curated seasonal collections rather than regular product drops and staying in constant consultation with local authorities to identify improvements that can be made to its supply chain.
And what of the clothes themselves? We’ve been lucky enough to try on a few pieces for ourselves and can attest to the levels of style, comfort and quality each of Frescobol Carioca’s collections promise. So go ahead and invest guilt-free.
