Your holiday style problems, solved

Dressing right for the occasion has never been so important

Knowing what to wear on holiday is hard, particularly if you’re heading to a destination you’ve never actually visited. Humidity, heat and culture are three things are are seriously worth considering when you’re packing up for the week off. That, and being organised. Leaving everything to the last minute is only going to end in disaster, with you reaching for the same pieces, all day everyday of your holiday. So, to help you out we’ve received the best summer style advice from The Chapar…

Being British, we’re damned if it’s hot and we’re damned if it’s cold. We’ll complain whatever the weather – particularly if we’re wearing the wrong outfit – we’re going to complain. But, gentlemen, changing something as simple as the material, colour and texture of your outfit is guaranteed to change your day. Making simple tweaks to your outfit can make the world of difference.

“Just because the mercury is rising doesn’t mean your only option is to strip off. One of the biggest style sins that we see in this department is men thinking they need to start wearing loose vests (you know the ones – they’re prone to causing the male nip-slip) to cope. Instead, focus on the material that you use. Linen always gets cited but for good reason: it’s light, breathable and gives you the louche air of Connery-era Bond. Fit is also key here – one of the great things about summer dressing is that it allows you to play about with a slightly more relaxed cut. It’s a fine line though – tread carefully!” – Jack, The Chapar.

Knowing what to wear to dinner when you need to dress to impress, but it’s too warm to do it and you also don’t want to go anywhere near a suit, can be hard. The age-old issue with the smart casual dress code is one that has been impossible to get right since ‘casual’ came onto the scene as an acceptable dress code. You’re on the French Riviera and it’s still 25 degrees at 8pm. Your friends have booked a table at a smart beach-side restaurant and you know that you have to wear a shirt but jeans aren’t allowed. Here’s how you solve it.

“The smart casual dress code is a perennial issue for men and summer seems to be the key time it rears its ugly head. Take your style cues from the Italians here and start incorporating some pastels into your look. A pair of lightweight white chinos, a pale blue (or pink if you’re feeling daring) shirt, a navy unstructured blazer and a pair of suede loafers will ensure you’re the best dressed man in the restaurant whilst retaining that laid back summer aesthetic.” – Jack, The Chapar.

The trouble with summer, particularly if you’re staying in England, is that it doesn’t hang around for long. The season is short, so you probably don’t really ever bother updating your summer wardrobe which inevitably results in one or two seriously bad choices, whether that’s the same red frame sunglasses you’ve worn for years, or swimming trunks that you haven’t bothered ever switching up.

“Summer is a great time to be a little adventurous with your accessories but it’s easy to go overboard. The key is to start with some classic investments: a pair of Orlebar Brown’s tailored swim-shorts will get you from beach to bar without the need for a change in between and a pair of Persol sunglasses will have you looking more Steve McQueen than lads-on-tour. Once you’ve nailed those, try incorporating a summer bracelet or two: Miansai’s nautical inspired bracelets are a great nod to that Riviera-inspired look that you should be aspiring for.” – Jack, The Chapar.
