Here’s what you can learn from the gathering of the world’s most stylish gentlemen

The Pitti Uomo tradeshow in Florence has become a mecca for men’s style over the years. Twice a year, the planet’s best dressed gentlemen turn up to strut the cobbled streets in an effort to catch the lens of any and every photographer in the vicinity – and there’s plenty. The result is pure street style fodder, a feast of the eyes for the sartorially inclined. London Collections Men may be a premier event but let’s be fair, the Italians have a rich history of immaculate tailoring and dapper vestiary nuances. Here’s what your wardrobe needs to take from the autumn/winter 2016 showing in Tuscany.

A style trend that has been bubbling around for a few years, the gents in Italy proved why now is finally the time to take the plunge with a checked coat / jacket / blazer. The sheer scope of squared patterns make it highly tailorable to your personal tastes, timeless tartan, Prince of Wales or buffalo all make the grade, as do takes less definable but more eye-catching prints. Pair the patterned blazer with more simple trousers of a contrasting, yet complimentary shade for the best result.

Rolling around

If one thing was evident from both LCM and Pitti, it’s that rollbacks are here to stay. Sack the shirt and tie for a turtle aping knit this winter, rock it under a suit, overcoat or even a cardigan for a warmer option that harks back to the points worth remembering from the 1970s. A fine-gauge merino or cotton is ultimately versatile, particularly in an enduring shade of navy or charcoal grey.

Double up

Do with your wardrobe as you do with your whiskey, the men at Pitti were all about doubling up. Two is evidently better than one, when it comes to tailored breasts that is. Double-breasted coats and jackets were noticeably prevalent around Florence. Bury any preconceptions you’ve got of a double-breast just being for the yacht club and the south of France. They’ve infiltrated the city, in a smarter, more put-together guise; forget the gold, anchor-etched buttons, the current double-breasted jacket is smart, sophisticated and slick.
