Words: Alex Woodhall
A fresh haircut has some serious transformative clout, more so perhaps than a bespoke suit cut straight from Savile Row. An on-point hairstyle can elevate a staid style better than any garment, and changing it up every so often is the best way to give your look a refresh and reboot. These are the coolest styles on the menu for the new season, food for thought, if you’ve been carrying the same coif for a couple of years now.
CAESAR STYLE
Who’s got it? Michael Fassbender and Russell Crowe (circa 2000)
Cropped and easy to maintain, the Caesar style is the timeless option ruling many a gentleman’s head right now. Cut equal on the sides and top with little length, it’s difficult to get wrong and requires little time to style in the morning. Works for most hair types, although best left in the past if your hair is more than a little textured.
SHORT WAVES
Who’s got it? Benedict Cumberbatch
Short styles are top of the list right now and this prep school throwback is making a return. Wavy hair pushed forward to a fringe is the way to go, give it a hint of direction though, either to the left or right rather than boxy, to avoid an unfortunate sartorial fail.
BUZZ CUT
Who’s got it? Tom Hardy’s had it extensively this year
Once carrying a thuggish association, the buzz cut is without a doubt the ‘do of the year’. It doesn’t take much explanation, a grade one or two all over is about it, you can even do it at home with a steady hand and a few mirrors. Leave just a little more length on top for a less extreme, arguably more gentlemanly, approach.
THE JAMES DEAN
Who’s got it? Dane DeHaan (playing James Dean in the film ‘Life’)
The definitive style icon’s signature cut is back again. Go short on the sides with a longer top, run some pomade through it when wet and style using a comb into the side sweep.
