Ten things to consider before getting that hair transplant
Thinning on top and thinking about going for it? Let's talk first...
Words: Zak Maoui
You're in your late twenties and your hair is starting to thin. You notice more is coming out in the shower than you're used to, and you want to do something about it, naturally. Well, most guys would, as is the norm, start to look into getting a hair transplant. It's an easy fix for a problem that you likely won't want to accelerate or worsen.
Fine, but do you actually need one? Are there alternatives to getting in the doctor's chair? Hair transplants aren't cheap, and you could be saving yourself a little bit of cash, especially if alternative methods are available.
Well, we decided to get in touch with our good friends down at the Farjo Hair Institute to find out what you should think about before settling on a hair transplant. Hair Transplant Surgeon & Co-Founder of the Institute, Dr Bessam Farjo, had all the answers...
Avoid Cut-Price Offers and Discount Deals including Time-Limited Offers
Bargain prices may indicate a sales rather than medical approach, compromised quality, unlicensed or unqualified practitioners, or clinics cutting corners on safety and precision. Hair transplantation is a lifelong investment in your appearance, so prioritise quality over cost to ensure optimal results and minimise risks.
Wait Until Hair Loss Reasonably Stabilises
Hair loss patterns evolve over time, particularly in younger individuals. Undergoing a transplant too early could mean hairs are placed in areas where further loss occurs, leading to an uneven appearance and the need for additional surgeries when you are not necessarily ready for it.
Choose a Reputable and Experienced Hair Transplant Surgeon
Research the credentials, reputation, and experience of your surgeon. An experienced professional ensures you receive personalised advice, meticulous care, and natural-looking results. Check if they are members of dedicated industry organisations like ISHRS who uphold their members to a certain standard. A proper specialist doctor should advise you about your hair loss and its current and future management both medical and potentially surgical, rather than ‘sell you a hair transplant’.
Understand the Limits of Donor Hair Supply
Hair transplantation relies on harvesting donor hair from the back or sides of your scalp mainly. This resource is finite and actually deteriorates with age, so improper planning can deplete donor areas and compromise options for future procedures as and when your hair loss will undoubtedly progresses and the bald areas become larger.
Realistic Expectations Are Key
A hair transplant does not completely restore your youthful hair density. After all, it is about redistribution of the remaining hairs rather than creating new ones. Discuss your goals with your surgeon to align expectations with what’s achievable based on your hair loss pattern and donor hair availability.
Commitment to Post-Operative Care
Following the procedure, adhering to recovery guidelines (such as avoiding strenuous activities and caring for the grafts) is crucial. Poor post-operative care can impact graft survival and final outcomes.
Consider the Long-Term Financial Implications
While a single procedure may suffice for some, ongoing hair loss might necessitate future surgeries or treatments. Budget not only for the initial transplant but also for potential future maintenance.
Understand That Results Take Time
Hair transplant results are not immediate; it can take 6–12 months for new hair to grow and thicken fully. Patience is essential to appreciate the final outcome of your investment.
Be aware that other non-surgical treatments can help
Treatments like finasteride, minoxidil, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy can complement hair transplant surgeries. A good and ethical surgeon should discuss what an ideal plan for your hair loss looks like and cover all the surgical and non-surgical options.
Consider the Psychological Impact
Hair restoration can boost self-confidence, but it’s important to address any underlying psychological concerns about hair loss. Managing expectations and ensuring you’re undergoing the procedure for the right reasons is essential for long-term satisfaction.
