As we all know, the fashion world operates on a cyclical basis and trends come and go like the wind. The world of men’s hair though moves at a relatively slow pace, and over the last few years the haircut of choice for dapper gents has been the good old fashioned side part. A haircut of military origin, the side part was pretty much the only style that was worn by men throughout the early 20th century right up to the 1960s.

In the present day, we can owe the resurgence of this vintage style to popular television programs like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire and with variations of it being worn by celebrities far and wide, it’s no wonder it has remained so popular for so long. One such variation, the slick back, is particularly en vogue right now, so if you fancy channelling your inner Brad Pitt or David Beckham, then be sure to follow our tips on how to achieve it.

THE CUT, Obviously, if you are going to attempt this look then getting the right haircut is essential. You’ll want the sides clippered tight, and depending on how severe you want the contrast to be, you could go as low as a grade 1 blended up through to the top. It’s up to you how short you want to go on the sides, but the hair on top needs to be at least 4 inches long, so that it will stay in place. If you are in doubt, don’t be afraid to show your barber a picture of exactly what you want. This will avoid any confusion and give them a clear idea of what they need to do.

THE PRODUCT, For an authentic vintage look, you should go for a high shine, high hold product that will make you look like you walked straight off a movie set. Whilst many would recommend a pomade, these can often be too heavy, so for something a little lighter, American Crew’s Grooming Cream works a treat.

THE STYLE, Once you have had your haircut and after you’ve been styled for the first time, you’ll be on your own. Luckily with this haircut though, it’s incredibly easy to style and you’ll be able to replicate that salon fresh finish time and time again. Work a small amount of product in through your hands, and apply evenly from the roots of your hair. Begin at the crown and then work your way forward, so that the fringe doesn’t become too weighed down. Then run your hands through your hair backwards, combing if need be. Be sure to smooth down any loose hairs and you’ll look debonair.
