Getting your hair cut at the barbers can be a tricky affair and at times you may think it’s best to just sit there in silence. If you do want to make small talk though, which lets face it, you may as well, then there are some strict rules you should abide by. Let’s not forget though that those skilled barbers have been on their feet all day cutting hair, so you’re nothing special. They can be moody creatures at the best of times and, as they’re tasked with making you look your best, it may be a good idea to keep them on your side. You don’t have to go out of your way to become best friends, but some simple etiquette would likely come in handy. Take a look at our 5 things you shouldn’t do at the barbers, and you’ll be on the right path.
1. KEEP CONVERSATION LIGHT, You may have to spend considerable one-to-one time with your barber, but that doesn’t mean that they want to hear the intimate details of your personal life. A large part of a barber’s job is interaction and they should be fairly good at strumming up conversation, so let them lead if you will but just remember…a gentleman never tells.
2. SIT STILL, There’s nothing worse than someone who constantly fidgets, and there is arguably nothing more that a barber hates. Not only is it annoying, it could also put your haircut in jeopardy, so sit still and allow your barber to unlock your hair’s full potential.
3. PERSONAL HYGIENE, Actually, we take back that last comment. There’s nothing worse than someone with bad hygiene. Wash your hair and wear deodorant…simple.
4. DON’T EXPECT THEM TO READ YOUR MIND, If in doubt, bring a picture of the style you are looking to achieve. They may be knowledgeable but you can’t expect your barber to know exactly what you want without you explaining it correctly.
5. LEAVE YOUR PHONE ALONE, Unless it’s an emergency, try and avoid taking phone calls mid-haircut. You should also wait until you’re finished to text or update your Facebook status. Imagine being interrupted every two minutes whilst doing your day job. Yeah, we didn’t think you’d like it.
