Google Announces Smart Contact Lenses
Words: Violet

When first hearing the word Google partnered with smart contact lenses, most would immediately conjuring an image of the internet being spectacularly displayed on a screen on your eye. Right? Wrong. The actual purpose of Google’s latest project is equally as amazing but is actually to do with diabetes.
It was announced last week that the tech giant has been secretly working on prototypes for smart contact lenses, eyewear that, through the use of embedded sensors and an antenna, can monitor and measure the glucose levels of people with diabetes. Incredibly, if this state of the art technology was to enter onto the market, it would be life changing for diabetes sufferers who currently have to prick themselves several times a day to test their blood. What’s more, Google have stated that they hope the smart lenses will warn the wearer when their glucose levels are dangerously low or high.
So how does the technology work? Well, Google scientists are actually building on an existing strain of research, using tears to track glucose levels. By placing a sensor between the layers then pricking a tiny pinhole in the lenses, this will allow the tears to seep over the monitor and get enable regular readings. Though too much excitement might be slightly premature considering the fact that this product is still far from entering onto the consumer market, Google have already created a prototype, done multiple clinical research studies and discussed with the US Food and Drug Administration so the concept is fully in motion. Tech lovers, watch this space!
