Giorgio Armani brings the archival photography of Aldo Fallai to London
Giorgio Armani is turning its Sloane Street store into an exhibition space
Words: Zak Maoui
Giorgio Armani rose to prominence in the 1970s, becoming a key player in the menswear game, and consequently changing the way men dressed. He implemented a new informality to tailoring, switching up the traditional suit and offering a louche, unstructured jacket and trouser combo, which would in turn make him world famous. Hop on Instagram today and anyone of those follower-heavy moodboard accounts (@cabmate, @90sanxiety etc) is still posting images of Seventies (and Eighties and Nineties, worn by the likes of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere) Armani designs. And most of them were shot by his friend and acclaimed photographer Aldo Fallai.
Aldo Fallai and Mr Armani met in the 1970s, and after working together for the first time in 1977, they struck up a professional relationship that spanned the golden years of the Armani brand. Images that resonate with the brand to this day. Photographs of men the world over wearing laid-back suiting, nothing but hung-low denim and women in über-chic Armani gowns. Earlier this year that was all put on display at Mr Armani’s exhibition space in the design house's hub in Milan, aka Armani/Silos. A monographic exhibition of the Florentine photographer’s work, spanning 1977-2021, is open to the public until August.
Yet, if you aren't travelling to Italy anytime before then, there's good news on the horizon. Because Armani is bringing the exhibition to London too. The Sloane Street store will temporarily become an exhibition space, housing a small collection of artwork showcasing 30 years of artistic dialogue between Aldo Fallai and Giorgio Armani. 26 images and 4 infographics, will be on display from the 12th May and will stay up until the 2nd June. Not to be missed by menswear heads.
