Last Wednesday in Florence, while the fashion pack had its eyes firmly set on Pitti’s showcase of contemporary trends and styles, Gentleman’s Journal, in partnership with Tracksmith, the US maker of heritage-style running gear, was, quite literally, blazing its own trail as it hosted an early-morning run through the streets of the Tuscan capital.
Taking in a striking route through the city, the 5km run, which welcomed friends of both companies and key figures in the menswear scene, began at the historic Circolo del Tennis Firenze 1898 – one of Italy’s oldest and most iconic sports clubs, and instantly recognisable from its string of rust-hued courts – and trailed along the banks of the Arno river, before concluding back at the starting venue.
Among the attendees were David Telfer, creative director of Sunspel; freelance stylist Benedict Browne; editor Peter Zottolo; Tim Yates and Mats Klingberg, of Trunk Clothiers; journalist Tom Stubbs; Matt Woodruff, of J. Mueser; Matt Taylor, CEO and co-founder of Tracksmith; Rafael Oliveira, creative director of Tracksmith; Massimo Alpian, director of global public relations at Tracksmith; and Harry Jarman, founder of Gentleman’s Journal, all of whom were clad in Tracksmith apparel – including the signature ‘Tracksmith Eliot Runner’ trainers and the ‘Twilight Tank’ – and injected movement and subtle splashes of neutral tones against a backdrop of some of Florence’s most handsome scenery.
Following the early-morning cardio session, guests then refuelled on a breakfast at the tennis club before being given a preview of Tracksmith’s newest collection, a hot-weather range that’ll cover all bases and occasions this summer, from apparel for clocking up some pre-season mileage to wears for casual, off-duty moments.
