A gentleman’s guide to winter footwear

A gentleman’s guide to winter footwear

Words: Charlie Thomas

With the weather only going to go downhill from here on out, it’s important that we reassess our choice of footwear.

Many will tell you that boots are the only way to go, but this is just not true. The main thing you’ll want is a rubber sole, but providing the weather isn’t hurricane-esque, you can get away with all manner of styles, including derbies, oxfords and even loafers.

THE BROGUE

The brogue is a year-round essential, but for foul weather a standard leather sole doesn’t quite cut the mustard. Update it with a sturdy commando sole however, and it will save you from slipping whilst ensuring your feet look impeccable at the same time.

If you’re looking for a suit-appropriate, winter-ready brogue then a sleek wingtip – complete with Dainite rubber sole – such as these are perfect.

THE DERBY

For those cold winter weekends, a rugged pair of derbies would make a fine choice. The burnished brown leather finish of these toe caps by Grenson will develop a unique patina over time, making the investment all the more worthwhile.

Winter shoes can, among other things, be characterised by a thick double or triple sole. When combined with a Goodyear storm welt, the constant battle against puddles will be your victory every time.

THE MONK STRAP

These dapper pebble-grain monk straps may not be the first choice when it comes to winter footwear, but their thick rubber sole and perforated toe (originally designed for farmers to allow water seepage) will make you think otherwise.

For those days when you want your shoes to say it all, Crockett & Jones’ Harrogate monk strap are perfect. Smart enough to be worn with a suit yet casual enough to be worn with shoes, they are the ideal alternate winter shoe.

THE LOAFER

Some days during winter may not necessarily be dreadful, weather wise. If it’s just a bit wet and windy, then loafers are perfectly acceptable, especially if, like these, they have a Dainite sole.

With minimal detailing and a classic ‘penny’ loafer silhouette, these slick Crockett and Jones loafers are constructed with a super-soft grain leather for maximum comfort.

THE BOOT

Of course, a winter shoe article wouldn’t be complete with boots. These Tricker’s brogues are the ultimate, with their double commando sole, Goodyear storm welt, and seven-eyelet lace up.

The Chelsea boot is a sleek option, and updated for the colder months this slightly chunkier version will keep your feet dry in style.
