Why gentlemanly style doesn’t always mean a suit and tie

Why gentlemanly style doesn’t always mean a suit and tie

The suit is the defining stalwart of men’s style. The gatekeeper of all things sartorial and a timeless embodiment of masculinity. There’s no getting away from the fact that pulling on a tailored suit will always do any man a favour, but there’s also a time and a place. Turning up to a casual brunch in a full three piece when the other guests are in t-shirts will only arouse suspicion and open you up to ridicule.

Taking a bit of time with your attire is as much about respect for those around you, as much as yourself. That time doesn’t always mean knotting up and stuffing some silk in your pocket, though. In the pantheon of gentlemanliness, those carved in marble are those who knew the difference between weekend and weekday attire, morning and evening get ups and that rocking a suit wasn’t be the all and end all when it came to wardrobe.

For the truly stylish walking among us, a suit is like a second skin, but a jean, t-shirt and jacket of equal importance come the weekend. These three outfits all provide a blueprint to slick off-duty style.

Start with a strong jacket

A statement signature jacket is something worth building your casual wardrobe around. Suede is this season’s choice, whilst swapping it out for a less nappy leather come the winter will ensure it lasts for years on end; that, and a good fabric protector anyway.
