Why the future is automated and very scary
Words: Charlie Gardiner-Hill
If you went to dinner with a friend, sat down and asked how he was, and he replied, “Terrible. I’ve just realised that automated self-educating robots are going to replace 45% of the current workforce and billions of humans will be forced out of jobs and into destitution through no fault of their own, and I’m probably going to be one of those guys”, then you’d probably think he was being at best melodramatic, at worst mentally ill.
Unfortunately although that might sound melodramatic, as this video shows, a world in which high intelligent, mass produced robots perform nearly all of the job roles in our economies (transportation, service industries, cleaning and even lawyering) is inevitable and will probably upon us within the century. To put that into perspective, the Great Depression saw just 25% unemployment and automated workforces could replace at least 45% of the current employed workforce.
But there’s always the promise of new jobs created by the same technology that makes the old jobs redundant, right? Wrong. Well, according to the video at least. It’s a sobering watch, but one full of predictions and information that every informed gentleman should be aware of.
