Cole Simmons discovers why after 50 years CLub 55 is better than ever –
Le Club 55, strategically nestled along the Pampelonne, is paradise to the tenth power. With its overgrown bamboo and provincial beach bungalow and wooden pier stretching along the warm Mediterranean its easy to see why the simplicity and charm bring even the most exhausted Russian billionaire off his megayacht to sink his feet into the sand as he orders enough Château Minuty for more ladies than an all girls finishing school. As I sat down at the bar waiting for my table to prepared I order a Pimm’s. The bar tender smiled and asked if I were English to which I cheerfully asked, “oui, je suis comment saviez-vous?” Without saying anything else he reached for the Moët & Chandon and declared “now, that’s a Pimms”. There is no doubting the team at Le Club 55’s enthusiasm and pride. During lunch I watched the waiters cater to everyone’s requests with their friendly French charisma (even when the table beside me where more difficult to deal with than a teething toddler). While I waited for my meal of St. Pierre Beaux Yeux, sars, Pageot, Rougets to be served, I sipped on my glass of Rosé and slid my feet below the surface of the sand. It’s the level of intimacy and delectable cuisine that make Le Club 55 a cut above the rest, not just for the English wanting to escape the rain but for local village residents as well. Salute!
