London’s healthiest lunch spots
Words: Gentleman's Journal
When you’re looking to grab a bite to eat on your much-too-short lunch break, it’s difficult to find somewhere that can offer you something both delicious and healthy. In a crowded market place, we’ve rounded up five of the tastiest and healthiest places to get your fill.
LEON
Taking the concept of fast food and turning it on its head, Leon aims to provide you with food that tastes good and i for you. Inspired by the flavours of Mediterranean cooking, Leon uses ingredients that leave you feeling fuller for longer. Their menu is seasonal, meaning only the freshest produce makes onto your plate. Their goal is to make it easy for people to grab a healthy bite to eat on the high street and they’ve succeeded. They’ve even been acknowledged by the RSPCA for the care they take in sourcing their ingredients.
Our recommendation for this season’s menu is the chicken, lemon and olive tagine (£4.95), made with chicken thigh that has been slow cooked with cumin, cinnamon and turmeric.
CHOP’D
Arguably London’s best choice for salads, Chop’d has an eclectic menu inspired by various cuisines using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. With their reasonably prices and incredible portion sizes, you won’t leave Chop’d disappointed. And if there isn’t anything on the menu that tickles your fancy, you can design your own salad or choose from their stews, soups and wraps.
Our favourite salad is the seared tuna and summer cous cous, with pomegranate, sundried tomatoes, wild garlic, basil, mint and lemon juice. (£5.50)
CRUSSH
The King of Juicing makes the blended trend entirely bearable, Crussh’s focus area is creating made-to-order smoothies, freshly pressed juices and incredibly nutritious food. The chain avoids additives, preservatives and GM foods, and steers you towards natural and organic ingredients. While they have a range of delicious sandwiches, wraps, super-food salads, sushi and soups, their juices are stand alone items on the menu. Offered in three sizes, the largest is more than filling enough to see you through the day, when it’s all too easy to wander what drink you’ll be ordering at the pub after work.
Choose the Lean Green Juice and embrace it gentlemen, Crussh makes juicing masculine, made with kale, spinach, apple, pear, kiwi and pineapple, your personal trainer will approve. (£4.75)
PRET A MANGER
We know, we know. They’re on the corner of every street, they’re crammed full of people in suits on their lunch break and the counter queue wastes your precious little time out of the office. Tasty, fresh products replenished every ten minutes on average offer something for everyone amongst their huge variety of salads and soups. You’re bound to find a handful that you’ll struggle to choose between and what’s more, they’re surprisingly filling.
We recommend the crayfish and avocado salad, with a citrus dressing (£4.45). Deliciously refreshing and light, leaving you ready to slug on with the rest of the day in the office.
HUMMUS BROS
If you’re looking for something fresh, look no further. The Hummus Bros pride themselves on using only fresh high quality produce free from any preservatives or additives with a reasonable price tag. The ethos of Hummus Bros is very clear – natural, home made hummus served with a variety of toppings, side salads, juices and desserts. Not forgetting the warm pitta bread. Simple, traditional, and delicious. And as the only restaurant in the UK dedicated to hummus, Hummus Bros offer a refreshing change to your lunchtime palette.
Our favourite dish is the hummus topped with fava beans and feta cheese (£5.15), coupled with the fresh mint and ginger lemonade on a warm summers day (£1.80).
