Flashback: The finest Aston Martin estates

People with children can often be overheard telling couples-in-love that your priorities change once you’ve got a few tots snapping at your ankles. They are of course right and soon enough some among you will find yourselves woefully judging cars on their ability to swallow buggies and absorb stains, rather than its ability to make you feel like a child in a toyshop.

But fear not, because here are three very good reasons why you should banish the thought of a Vauxhall Zafira, scrimp on the baby wipes and head down to the Aston Martin dealership instead.

LAGONDA SHOOTING BRAKE , , More practical than a trusty Volvo 240 Estate and rarer than a two-headed Dodo, the Aston Martin Lagonda Shooting Brake was fashioned by Swiss auto tinkering firm, Roos Engineering as a one-off between 1998-1999 for a customer in Hong Kong. Starting life as a standard Aston Martin Lagonda saloon in 1987, the owner needed enough room to transport himself and his dogs, so rather than buying a new car, he had it converted.

V8 VANTAGE V600 SHOOTING BRAKE , , This curious looking beast is what occurs when 1800 hours of Swiss craftsmanship meet a 1999 Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Produced by Roos Engineering, the Shooting Brake’s 600bhp supercharged V8 engine encouraged Roos to proclaim it as the “fastest and strongest estate car in the world” boasting a 0-60mph time of 3.9seconds. Enormous amounts of fun for the driver, but we’re not sure the kids in the back will be as enthusiastic.

DB5 SHOOTING BRAKE , , The original DB5 was the vehicle of choice for starry eyed spy 007 and if Bond secretly harbored a family at home, there’s no doubt he’d have himself an Aston Martin DB5 Shooting Brake. Originally created in 1965 for David Brown, the father of the DB models, this variant was developed to enable him to pack his shooting and polo equipment into the back without compromising on appearance, or performance.
