Whether it is contemporary or period, European or American; there continues to be films that are not only visually stunning but those that create a stylish world through the means of costume and set design. Here are some of our favourite from the last fifteen years…
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Say what you want about the success of the narrative and its execution, there is no denying that this was a visually stunning film. Already cinematically stylised as a glamourous decade, Baz Luhrman and costume design contributor Miuccia Prada have taken that opulence and glamour to a whole new level.
Casino Royale (2006)
In truth, we could have picked any of the Bond movies but there was something about Casino Royale that really stood out. Daniel Craig wears the suave, dapper and luxury of 007 very well.
Inception (2010)
Mind bendingly clever, superby acted and filled to the brim with incredibly dapper suits.
Atonement (2007)
Keira Knightley in that green dress. Need we say more?
A Single Man (2009)
The greats of fashion and film joined forces for A Single Man with legendary designer Tom Ford directing an all star cast including Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Nicholas Hoult. Ford designed all the costumes worn by Firth in the film so it comes as no surprise that they are superbly sophisticated and exquisitely tailored. The rest of the 1960’s attire isn’t half bad either.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Oscar winning costume designers Gary Jones and Ann Roth create a stylish world of Riviera cum Euro city chic.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
While we were trying to keep up with the spies of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, we couldn’t help but be slightly distracted by the impeccable Saville Row inspired suits.
Catch Me if you Can (2002)
Bright primary colours are the key to making the 60s come alive in this Steven Speilberg biopic. We watch as Leonardo DiCaprio depicts real life con man Frank Abagnale Jr as he infiltrates and poses as a lawyer, doctor and Pan Am pilot fraudulently living the life of wealth and luxury.
