There’s something about JFK that continues to fascinate and intrigue to this day, 50 years after he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on 22nd November 1963. Perhaps it’s the suddenness of his death, maybe his famous sexual charisma and rumoured numerous affairs with Hollywood starlets, or it could be his brilliant aversion of nuclear warfare during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the autumn of 1962. Whatever the reason, this remarkable man has captivated imaginations for half a century.
A new film focuses on the day of his death. Parkland Hospital was the nearest to the site of the assassination which was, in theory, sufficiently equipt to deal with this kind of catastrophe. The doctors and nurses working there, however, were unable to do anything to save the life of the most important man in the Western world. As has been seen, countless times, on video footage that an onlooker took on that fateful day, the President’s survival was impossible from the moment the bullet hit.
That footage constitutes another element of this film, looking at the man who took it. Other threads look at the Secret Service and the FBI, while another examines the aftermath for those closest to, and often appointed by, the President. Starring Zac Efron (don’t let that put you off – High School Musical was a long time ago), Billy Bob Thornton, Paul Giamatti and Marcia Gay Harden, Parkland is directed by Peter Landesman.
