Words: Violet
This week to a film that is sparking awe and amazement where ever it’s shown. Gravity, a drama/sci-fi/thriller co-written and directed by the Oscar nominated Alfonso Cuarón, follows a medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) and an astronaut (George Clooney) as they travel out to space to repair the Hubble telescope. Next, disaster ensues when their shuttle is struck by space debris and they have to find a way back to Earth.
Both Clooney and Bullock – who are working together for the first time – have been praised for their standout performances but the main draw of this film is the overwhelmingly incredible visual effects. A true masterpiece when it comes to the demonstration of visual beauty and technological advances in film, Gravity truly is out of this world (sorry, couldn’t resist).
So, if it is the biggest visual film of the year – one that is already sparking Oscar buzz for all parties involved – it can’t have been cheap then? Correct. This film ended up costing more that $80 million and four years to create – something the Cuarón admits they “miscalculated”.
“The technology to create all these special effects didn’t exist, so we had to invent it. That’s why we took so long.” We can vouch it was most certainly worth the wait.
Gravity is out in cinemas nationwide now.
